Electric Vehicle License Plates: Types and How to Get Them
Electric vehicle license plates have distinctive features that set them apart from conventional car plates. The main difference lies in the blue stripe at the bottom of the plate. This unique design helps easily identify electric-powered vehicles from those with gasoline engines.
In addition to the signature blue stripe, there are several types of EV license plates distinguished by the color of the plate background: white, black, yellow, red, and green. Each plate color is designated for specific categories of electric vehicles, such as private cars, public transportation, government vehicles, and more.
Understanding these types of EV license plates is crucial for current EV owners or those planning to buy one. Let’s explore the differences between each type of EV plate and how to obtain them, so you’ll be well-prepared when handling vehicle registration.
Types of Electric Vehicle License Plates in Indonesia
Electric vehicle (EV) license plates in Indonesia come in several types, each distinguished by a different color. The color regulations for EV license plates are governed by the Indonesian National Police Regulation (Perpol) No. 7 of 2021, Article 45, Paragraph 2. Below is an overview of the different types of EV license plates in Indonesia based on their usage:
White Plate with Blue Stripe
White plates with a blue stripe were initially designated for trial electric vehicles that had a Vehicle Trial Permit (STCK). The white background was used to indicate the trial status of these EVs.
However, under the latest Korlantas Polri regulation effective from June 2022, the base color of the Motor Vehicle Registration Plate (TKNB) for private vehicles was officially changed to white. As a result, EVs using white plates with a blue stripe are no longer limited to trial vehicles only.
Black Plate with Blue Stripe
Black plates with a blue stripe were originally used for privately owned electric vehicles. This color scheme applies only to vehicles purchased before June 2022—prior to the regulation that changed the TKNB base color for private vehicles to white.
Yellow Plate with Blue Stripe
Yellow plates with a blue stripe are designated for electric vehicles used for public transportation, such as electric taxis and other public transit services. The yellow background signifies that the vehicle belongs to the public transport category.
Red Plate with Blue Stripe
Red plates with a blue stripe are assigned to electric vehicles used as official government fleet vehicles. The red color indicates that the vehicle is designated for government operations and official purposes.
Green Plate with Blue Stripe
Green plates with a blue stripe are issued to electric vehicles operating in free trade zones, such as in Batam. Vehicles with green plates benefit from import duty exemptions but are restricted to operating only within the designated free trade zone and are not permitted to be used in other regions of Indonesia.
How to Get an Electric Vehicle License Plate
The process of obtaining an electric vehicle (EV) license plate in Indonesia is fairly easy and practical. You can apply for it directly at the nearest SAMSAT office or through an online service. Make sure you prepare the required documents: the EV’s vehicle registration certificate (STNK), vehicle ownership document (BPKB), proof of vehicle tax payment, and proof of purchase from the dealer or distributor.
To get an EV license plate at a SAMSAT office, follow these steps:
- Visit the nearest SAMSAT office from your residence.
- Submit an application for a new EV license plate.
- Undergo a physical vehicle inspection to verify the chassis and engine numbers.
- Fill out the license plate application form and submit all required documents.
- Pay the administrative and plate-printing fees according to the vehicle type.
- Wait for the process to be completed and collect your new license plate and updated STNK.
If you cannot visit the SAMSAT office in person, you can apply for an EV license plate through the ROPILNAS online system. However, this service is only available in certain regions and not yet nationwide. The steps are as follows:
- Access the ROPILNAS website or its available mobile application.
- Register for an account first. Once registered, log in to your account.
- Choose your preferred license plate number according to your domicile.
- If the chosen number is available, you will be directed to fill out an electronic form (e-form).
- After completing the e-form, you will receive a booking barcode and a virtual account number.
- Make the payment for the license plate fee via mobile banking or an ATM.
- Once the payment is successful, visit the SAMSAT office to collect your new license plate.
The standard fee for a new EV license plate is IDR 100,000 for a regular plate (NRKB). If you prefer a customized or “vanity” plate for your EV, the cost ranges between IDR 5 million to IDR 20 million, depending on the selected number.

Why Are Electric Vehicle Plates Different from Regular Plates?
The difference in license plate design between electric vehicles and conventional cars exists for a reason—it serves a specific function. The blue stripe on an EV license plate acts as a distinctive marker indicating that the vehicle is a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).
This color distinction makes it easier for traffic officers and authorities to identify electric vehicles. For example, under Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 88 of 2019, EVs are allowed to pass through areas subject to the odd-even traffic restriction.
In addition, the special plate design helps the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system quickly and accurately recognize electric vehicles, making traffic law enforcement more efficient.
That concludes the explanation of the different types of electric car license plates and how to obtain them—essential information for every EV owner to know. Each base color on an EV license plate serves a specific purpose, whether for private vehicles, public transportation, government fleets, or those operating in free-trade zones.
By understanding the various types of EV license plates, you’ll be able to identify each EV category and handle vehicle administration without confusion. If you’re planning to buy or are interested in a modern electric or hybrid vehicle, check out the available models at chery.co.id.
