Know the Types of Car Tire Patching and Their Price Range

Car tires can get punctured on the road due to sharp objects or rough surfaces. If this happens, drivers should take their vehicles to a tire repair shop. However, make sure the repair method used matches your tire type and the nature of the damage.

There are several types of tire repair methods, including patch repair, tire steel string, plug and patch, and sealant. Each method has its own process and durability level. Additionally, tube-type and tubeless tires require different repair approaches.

That’s why it’s important for car owners to understand the various tire repair methods to avoid choosing the wrong service. Here are several common car tire repair techniques, along with how they work, their pros and cons, and estimated costs

1. Patch Tire Repair

The patch tire repair method is one of the most commonly used techniques. This type of repair is typically applied to vehicles that use tube-type tires (with inner tubes). The process involves attaching a rubber patch to the punctured area of the tire, then heating it so the rubber adheres firmly and doesn’t come off easily.

Patch repair is suitable for fixing punctures caused by nails, screws, or other small sharp objects that pierce the tread area, not the sidewall. This method effectively seals holes without damaging the tire’s structure, making it safe for long-term use.

The advantages of this repair method are that it’s quick, easy to find, and inexpensive. However, its main drawback lies in its limited durability. The cost of patch tire repair typically ranges from Rp15,000 to Rp30,000 per puncture point.

2. Plug and Patch Tire Repair

This type of tire repair is ideal for fixing tubeless tires with larger punctures or leaks located in sensitive areas. The plug and patch method uses a special umbrella-shaped rubber plug that has rubber layers on both its upper and lower sides.

The rubber plug is inserted into the puncture using compressed air. Then, the tire’s surface is coated with a special adhesive and pressed with a heated clamp to ensure the patch adheres more firmly and lasts longer.

The plug and patch method offers superior strength and durability compared to regular patching. However, its downside is that the process takes more time and costs more. The price for this type of repair typically ranges from Rp75,000 to Rp100,000 per tire.

3. String Plug Tire Repair

The string plug method, often called the “worm patch”, is the quickest and most practical repair option, especially useful for emergency situations on the road. This technique is best suited for tubeless tires, particularly when dealing with small punctures on the tire tread area.

The repair process is quite simple: a special rubber string (seal string) coated with adhesive is inserted into the puncture using a dedicated tool. The worm-shaped rubber is pushed from the outside into the hole, sealing the leak. Once installed, the tire can be used immediately without removing it from the rim.

The advantages of the string plug method are its speed (only about 5–10 minutes) and low cost. However, the downside is that it’s less durable and may not hold up for long-term use. The typical cost for a string plug tire repair is around Rp20,000–Rp30,000 per tire.

4. Sealant Tire Repair

The sealant tire repair method uses a special liquid inserted into the tire through the air valve. This sealant automatically seals small leaks from the inside of the tire. When air starts to escape due to a puncture, the pressure pushes the liquid toward the hole, where it hardens and seals the leak.

This method is ideal for emergency situations, such as when you get a flat tire on the road and no repair shop is nearby. However, it is only effective for small punctures—typically less than 3 mm in diameter, and is not recommended for large tears or damage on the tire sidewall.

The advantages of sealant repair include ease of use, as it can be done independently without removing the tire. Its drawbacks are that the sealant can dirty the inside of the car wheels and it’s not suitable for long-term use. In terms of cost, sealant tire repair generally ranges from Rp50,000 to Rp100,000 per tire.

Tips for Choosing the Right Tire Repair Method

When selecting a tire repair method, there are several factors you should consider to ensure the result is effective and long-lasting. Here are some tips to help you choose the right repair method for your car tires:

1. Choose the Method Based on the Type of Damage

The first step in selecting the right tire repair method is to match it with the type and size of the damage. If the tire is only punctured by a small nail or screw, the string plug repair method can be a quick and economical solution.

However, for larger leaks, cracks, or irregular tears, it’s better to use the patch or plug and patch method, as these provide a stronger and more durable seal. If the damage occurs on the sidewall, any type of repair is generally not recommended due to safety risks, it’s best to replace the tire entirely.

2. Make Sure the Repair Is Done at a Workshop with Standard Equipment

The quality of a tire repair largely depends on the tools used and the technician’s skill. Therefore, make sure the process is carried out at a reliable workshop equipped with standard tools, skilled professionals, and complete spare parts. A proper or professional workshop will ensure the repair is tight, precise, and long-lasting.

3. Avoid Repeated Repairs at the Same Spot

A common mistake many car owners make is patching the same spot multiple times. This can weaken the tire’s internal structure and lead to new leaks near the old repair area. If your tire has already been patched in the same location and leaks again, it’s best to replace the tire instead of repairing it again.

Each tire repair method has its own handling process and durability level. Make sure to choose the tire patching method that best suits your tire type, the location of the leak, and its severity to ensure a safe and long-lasting result. In addition, never neglect regular tire maintenance for your safety and driving comfort.
