Class A Driver's License (SIM A): Definition and Designation

SIM A (Class A License) is a driver's license that is mandatory for drivers of four-wheeled motor vehicles with a permissible weight not exceeding 3,500 kg. This document is proof of legal competence for drivers of private cars or light public transport vehicles.

This article will outline in depth the technical definition of SIM A, the classification difference between Individual SIM A and General SIM A, and vehicle designation limits according to applicable regulations.

Classification of SIM A Types in Indonesia

The Indonesian National Police divides the SIM A category into two main types based on the vehicle's usage purpose. This difference determines the minimum age of the applicant and the examination procedure that must be passed.

1. Individual SIM A (SIM A Perseorangan)

Individual SIM A is intended for drivers of private cars or passenger vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of 3,500 kg. This type is the most commonly owned by the public for daily mobility purposes.

  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Function: Driving private cars such as sedans, hatchbacks, MPVs, SUVs, to private pick-ups.

2. General SIM A (SIM A Umum)

General SIM A must be owned by drivers who operate motor vehicles to transport people or goods for commercial purposes (public transport). The operated vehicles still have a maximum weight limit of 3,500 kg.

  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 20 years old.
  • Function: Driving taxis, city transport cars (angkot), or commercial rental vehicles.

Vehicle Designation for SIM A Holders

SIM A holders have the legal authority to drive vehicles with specific weight and type specifications according to Law Number 22 of 2009. Here are the vehicle criteria included in the SIM A scope:

  • Passenger Vehicles: Covers the private car category with standard passenger capacity (generally a maximum of 8 people including the driver).
  • Light Goods Vehicles: Covers load vehicles like pick-ups or box trucks with a note that the total weight (vehicle + load) is not more than 3,500 kg.
  • Transmission Technology: Applies to vehicles with manual or automatic transmission, however, in the examination process, the choice of transmission type will determine the note on your SIM card.

Administrative Obligations of SIM A Owners

SIM A has a validity period of 5 years and must be renewed before the expiration date. Late renewal, even by just one day, will result in the owner having to follow the new SIM creation procedure from scratch (retaking theory and practical exams).

In addition, SIM A owners are obliged to:

  • Carry valid physical or digital documents when driving.
  • Obey traffic signs and road markings to maintain a driving safety point record.
  • Ensure the identity on the SIM aligns with the data on the vehicle document (STNK).

Conclusion

Possessing a SIM A appropriate for its designation is a form of compliance with the law and safety responsibility on the highway. Individual SIM A is intended for private mobility, while General SIM A is for commercial activities with a vehicle weight limit of 3,500 kg. Ensure your license is always active to guarantee safety and comfort during the trip.
