6 Types of SUVs You Should Know Before Buying

SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) are one of Indonesia’s favorite vehicle choices, offering a combination of bold looks, driving comfort, and the ability to tackle various road conditions. Many SUVs are designed with high ground clearance and spacious cabins, making them perfect for families or drivers who frequently travel, whether in the city or on long trips.

Before buying an SUV, it’s important to understand the various types available on the market, from compact, crossover, and full-size to luxury SUVs—each with different characteristics and advantages depending on the user’s needs and lifestyle.

In this article, we’ll explore various SUV options from Chery, a Chinese automaker gaining attention in the Indonesian market. From high-tech models like the Omoda E5 to powerful SUVs like the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, and rising stars like the J6—complete with features, specifications, and available variants.

1. Compact SUV

Compact SUVs, also called low or mini SUVs, are smaller in size with enough power for city driving. They target users who want the rugged look of an SUV but still prioritize practicality and efficiency for daily use. Their advantages include smaller dimensions, easy maneuverability, and better fuel economy compared to larger SUVs.

Chery offers three compact models: Tiggo 7 Pro, Omoda 5, and Omoda 5 GT. Measuring around 4,400–4,500 mm in length, they are easy to maneuver in heavy city traffic and fit into tight parking spaces. Despite their compact size, they still provide roomy cabins with modern SUV features like ADAS safety systems, 360° cameras, and advanced entertainment systems.

2. Midsize SUV

Midsize SUVs have larger dimensions and more powerful engines than compact SUVs. They offer a spacious cabin and greater comfort, especially for long-distance travel. Chery’s leading models in this category are the Chery Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 8 Pro.

  • Tiggo 8 is powered by a 1.6L TGDI engine producing 186 HP and 290 Nm of torque, ideal for both daily and intercity driving.
  • Tiggo 8 Pro comes with a more powerful 2.0L TGDI engine delivering 250 HP and 390 Nm of torque—impressive performance for a midsize SUV.

Both offer premium comfort features such as a panoramic sunroof, premium audio systems, 7-passenger seating, and ADAS safety features.

3. Full-size SUV

Full-size SUVs, also called “true SUVs,” are the largest in their class. With powerful engines, they are built to carry many passengers and cargo while conquering various terrains. The Tiggo series includes full-size SUVs, with a highlight being the Tiggo 8 CSH (Comfort, Smart, Hybrid)—Chery’s latest hybrid SUV.

  • Tiggo 8 CSH features hybrid technology delivering 204 PS and 310 Nm of torque, offering excellent fuel efficiency and responsive acceleration. Its 1,500 cc turbo petrol engine allows up to 90 km in full-electric mode.

With a spacious 7-seater cabin and premium comfort features, the Tiggo 8 CSH is ideal for users seeking power, efficiency, and luxury. Recently, it achieved 500 Vehicle Orders (SPK) in a short time.

4. Luxury SUV

Luxury SUVs focus on elegance, advanced technology, and top-class comfort in addition to performance. Chery’s luxury lineup includes the Tiggo 8 ProTiggo 8 Pro Max, and Tiggo 8 CSH.

  • All models feature powerful yet efficient engines, premium-quality interiors, complete safety features, premium sound systems, and spacious 7-passenger cabins.
  • Tiggo 8 Pro Max offers both Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD). It earned a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP Safety), solidifying its status as a high-safety luxury SUV.
  • Advanced safety tech like ADAS, 540° cameras, and smart driving features are standard.

5. Off-Road SUV

Built for adventurers, off-road SUVs are designed for extreme terrains. They often have AWD or RWD, special drive modes, and higher ground clearance. Chery introduced the J6 EV—its first electric off-road SUV—at GJAW 2024.

  • Chery J6 EV comes with AWD called Intelligent Wheel Drive (IWD) delivering 385 Nm of torque, and RWD for rocky, muddy, or sandy roads.
  • Equipped with 8+X drive modes, massage seats, 12 Infinity speakers, and a 540° camera, it offers luxury even off-road.

With up to 426 km range and 0–100 km/h acceleration in just 6.5 seconds, the J6 EV is a tough yet modern choice for explorers. It also contributed to a 47% increase in EV sales in Indonesia earlier this year.

6. Crossover SUV

Crossover SUVs combine passenger car comfort with SUV toughness. Their sleek design and adequate ground clearance make them ideal for city use. Chery’s top picks here are the Omoda E5 and Tiggo Cross.

  • Omoda E5 is a futuristic electric crossover SUV with a 61 kWh battery, delivering up to 430 km (WLTP) or 505 km (NEDC) range. Producing 201 HP and 340 Nm of torque, it’s agile in various conditions. Its fast charging takes it from 30% to 80% in just 28 minutes, while low cabin noise (62.9 dB at 120 km/h) ensures superior comfort.
  • Tiggo Cross has a 1.5L CVT petrol engine producing 116 PS and 138 Nm, perfect for practicality, comfort, and efficiency. It secured over 500 SPK at the IIMS 2025.

SUV vs. MPV: What’s the Difference?

SUVs are designed for varied terrains with high ground clearance and often AWD, while MPVs (Multi Purpose Vehicles) focus more on passenger comfort and capacity—ideal for families and city trips.

With Chery’s diverse SUV lineup—ranging from practical compacts to modern crossovers, full-size, and luxury SUVs—all powered by class-leading engines and loaded with technology, there’s a perfect option for every lifestyle. Stylish design, powerful performance, fuel efficiency, and complete safety features make them ideal for daily use, family travel, or adventure.

If you’re looking for an SUV that fits your lifestyle and modern driving needs, Chery SUVs are a smart choice this year. Visit your nearest Chery dealer or check the official website to explore features and book a test drive!

Differences Between the J6 and J6T: Upgraded Features, Performance & Technology

The arrival of Chery’s off-road EV, the J6T, is set to enliven the electric SUV segment in Indonesia. PT Chery Sales Indonesia (CSI) has introduced the J6T as the latest variant of the J6 model, which has been on the road in the country for a year. Many people are now curious about the differences between Chery’s J6 and J6T.

Chery launched the J6T as the highest variant of the J6 lineup. At a glance, the exterior design looks similar, but the Chery J6T brings several upgrades. Improvements in various aspects give the J6T a more modern design, longer driving range, and other interesting details worth highlighting.

As the flagship version, the Chery J6T is designed for modern urban users who want a tough yet stylish vehicle. Here are some of the key differences between the J6 and J6T in terms of design, performance, technology, and more.

1. The J6T Features a More Rugged Body Design

Body Gagah dan Mewah J6T

The J6T comes with a more rugged body compared to the standard J6. Its bulkier posture is shaped by larger dimensions, along with the addition of a new body kit and overfenders that give it a more aggressive look.

As an electric SUV built for adventure, the J6T measures 4,433 mm in length, 1,916 mm in width, and 1,741 mm in height. These dimensions make it about 3 cm taller than the regular J6, which measures 4,406 mm x 1,910 mm x 1,715 mm.

The side profile of the J6T is also made more striking with the use of new 245/55/R19 wheels, giving it a sturdier stance. The front and rear fenders are equipped with additional air vents that enhance the visual appeal while helping improve airflow.

Despite being larger, the J6T is actually lighter. The RWD variant weighs only 1,789 kg, while the AWD variant weighs 1,897 kg. Each is lighter by 31 kg and 15 kg respectively compared to the previous J6 model. This weight reduction is achieved through the use of a lighter aluminum frame that is rust-resistant and offers 30% better rigidity.

2. Off-Road Capability Enhanced on the J6T

The Chery J6T doesn’t just look tougher, its ability to tackle rough terrain has also been significantly improved. The vehicle’s ground clearance has increased from 195 mm to 225 mm, making it more capable of handling uneven roads and shallow water crossings.

In addition, the J6T now has a 26-degree approach angle and a 28-degree departure angle. These front and rear bumper angles have been improved by around 30 mm compared to the standard J6. This specification allows the vehicle to maneuver more safely in challenging terrain.

Interestingly, the J6T’s battery is equipped with triple-layer protection (triple armor) for added safety. The vehicle’s wading depth reaches 625 mm, enabling it to confidently navigate extreme road conditions and light flooding.

3. The J6T’s Battery Provides a Longer Driving Range

Baterai J6T

The Chery J6T still offers two drivetrain options—RWD and AWD. However, both configurations in the J6T come with improved efficiency and better driving range. The vehicle now uses a new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery, which delivers a longer range compared to the standard J6.

The RWD variant of the J6T is equipped with a 65.9 kWh battery capable of covering up to 431 km (NEDC). Meanwhile, the AWD variant carries a 69.77 kWh battery with a range of up to 436 km (NEDC), and produces 205 hp and 385 Nm of torque. These range figures position the J6T among electric vehicles with long-distance capability.

For comparison, the standard J6 can only reach 413–426 km depending on the variant. In terms of charging, the Chery J6T supports a maximum charging power of 100 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in roughly 25 minutes.

4. The J6T’s Exterior Design Looks Even More Stylish

Bumper Depan

On the exterior, the Chery J6T receives several noticeable updates. The front bumper now comes in black with sharper, sportier design lines. This model is also equipped with a gloss-finished Front Dual Guard that gives it a sturdier appearance, along with LED fog lamps for better illumination.

The Chery logo has been repositioned near the right headlamp. It is now integrated into a glossy black garnish that connects both front lamps. The “i”-shaped LED accent previously found on the J6 has been removed, giving the J6T a cleaner and more modern front look.

Moving to the rear, the J6T’s bumper has been revised with the addition of a storage compartment featuring a soft-touch opening. Overall, the Chery J6T presents a more masculine character that better reflects its enhanced off-road capability.

5. The J6T’s Interior Is Designed to Be More Luxurious

Interior J6T

Inside the cabin, the changes are not as drastic as those on the exterior. However, several refinements successfully make the J6T’s interior feel fresher and more premium. From the moment you enter, a more luxurious atmosphere is immediately noticeable, from the front dashboard to the passenger seats.

The J6T’s seats feature a New Section Seat Surface Design that offers better ergonomics and enhanced comfort. The air-conditioning vents have also been redesigned to look simpler and more modern. Meanwhile, the center area between the front seats now includes an Arm Rest Box with a side-opening mechanism.

The J6T’s instrument panel also receives updated touches. The trip and odometer display on the 9.2-inch screen now uses a clearer and more informative layout. Additionally, the sun visor design and the stitching pattern on the headrests have been refined to create a more elegant impression.

Despite these updates, the J6T still retains its highly functional 15.6-inch touchscreen. Through this screen, users can access various vehicle settings, including AC controls, door configurations, driving mode selections, and battery status information.
